Mobile 2.0? Tim O’Reilly Interview #1

Yesterday, Peter and I had the pleasure to get Mr O’Reilly for an interview. Peter asked him about his valuation about Mobile 2.0 and yes the future will be mobile.

If there is a mobile 2.0 it’s going to be because somebody breaks the back of the phone companies.

Enjoy:

In cooperation with blogpiloten.de, question #2 and #3 will published in the next two days. We are looking forward to the round-table with him and the people from Techweb.

So after Eric Schmidt jumps up and down telling everyone in the O’Reilly web world and delivers andriod, Tim catches up and starts talking about how the web will come to the mobile finally, however, it is the wrong story and too late!

The idea that you will browse the web from your phone is so last year, as I presented at Tim’s Web 2.0 expo in SFO in 2006, at which point it was only a minor side show, other than the CEO of Google telling everyone that Mobile is the future.

Mobile 2.0 or Mobile Web 2.0 is not about the web coming to a mobile, this is a minor part, important but not the prime consideration. It is all about what mobile can do that is unique. “What can the mobile do; that the the web cannot!”

A mobile device will provide a data stream that provides location, time and who you are doing things with, this stream will improve services on Web, Mobile and TV through the application of analysis of your digital footprint (which is not your identity)

If you want to join 200+ other leaders in mobile thinking, come to the mobile2event (www.mobile2event.com) in SFO next week 3rd November 2008, and talk about the implications, the business model, how to do it and who is doing it.

Guess what – as this is organized by key industry thought leaders, for people in the industry who want to debate it, and as such is priced on a basis of engagement at only costs $249.

    See you there………

    Agree wholly with Tony.

O’Reilly’s right that some telco-grade thinking has to be overcome, but by definition, his view on mobile probably defaults to being from the perspective of the desktop “teenage brother” web. The medium where he is most in his element.

An interesting point of view: but perhaps a teenage brother is not always best placed to judge the potential of a junior sibling, just learning to walk.

Indeed, I believe there has been considerable study to demonstrate that younger siblings in real life are more likely to exhibit “mould-breaking creative skills” than their seniors ;-)

And the Mobile2 event is the chance to prove it.

…but did Tim touch on key points as well on the next generation of mobile apps (i.e. Mobile 2.0 vs. mobile web 2.0), the ones that will take advantage of mobile context (location, time and who, etc) – which is part of the hidden information he mentioned.

Open source, yes, that will happen regardless – it is a matter of time… on mobility everything just takes longer.
